I have a question about negative space in Hopper and in general. Is the definition of neg. space the absence of an image?– such as a broad area of white paint on the canvas. In Hopper, are the broad areas of white walls, etc. a kind of negative space even though they depict objects (like walls)? As abstract design the’re kind of blank in terms of image (as in a blank wall). Would a broad swath of blue be negative space in terms of design even if it’s clearly the ocean? In abstract painting (not Hopper) where there are no representational objects would the whole painting be negative space? grammwrites@blogspot.com
